Trying to determine what year this pan is. It looks like it is in pretty good shape. It may be a good buy for me. Any help or information would be appreciated. I have a two other pics if you think that would help.
Thanks,
B

Looks like a late model 1973+. If you have the vin number you can look up the year on the net.

If you haven't found out the year yet, look on the frame tunnel under where the rear seat would go and there should be a chassis number. Post the number on here or look it up in a manual. It will tell you the info for that chassis.

are you missing any numbers in there? like an extra 1 at the beginning or anything (if your missing an extra 1 at the beginning, your chassis is a late 68)? starting in 64 they used 9 digit chassis numbers and before that they were 7 digits I believe

I don't believe there are letters in the chassis code

Ok the serial number is 119333092
I found a few websites that \"decode\" the serial - they say 1969.
the pan in the pics for $800 - is that a good deal?
the owner says everything has been replaced, like new.
Thanks again for everyone's help.

FYI, VW vin numbers on the pan (rear near torsion housing) from 1966 on will begin with 11 and the third number represents the year of manufacture. For example a 1966 would read 116..... a 1972 would read 112..... and so on. Hope this helps.

1189 + 2 = 1191

That price seems high to me. You will end up changing all the torsion bushings and shocks when you covert it anyway. I would look for a complete car to start with.

I would try to find a complete car. You should be able to find one for cheaper than that pan. Your going to pull everything off anyways and change lots of things so you don't want to pay for a bunch of new parts necessarily.

It seems like a difficult call to me. Most of the older VW's I've seen have lots of rust on the pan.
So if you have to take it down to the pan to prepare it, why not start with a fresh pan and work your way up? (at least save the labor of removing everything) But I don't really know.
The price I posted is his asking price. I have seen some whole VW's for about the same price, but they look in pretty bad shape and I would guess quite a bit of labor just to get it down to the pan.

That pan you are looking at still needs stock wheels to be legal. Try Craigs list for a beater car. Chiro in Arizona purchased an entire VW wrecking yard. If they are close might try calling them.
