1101 was hauling ass having fun with Ed till our alternator strap broke the first day, then broke the alternator in two pieces the second day giving us a DNF for both days. 1102 my other car driven by John Ruiz of Los Vegas finished third in class, with little or no problems, way to go Johnny.

The 1189 started day 1 on the back row for the landrush start. Came outta the infield in 3rd behind the 1134 and 1101. The 1191 got lucky and passed me on the broken asphalt (while I was texting) and that put me in 4th. At the end of the broken asphalt I got a good run and passed the 1134 and then motored past the 1191 like they were in reverse. Set my sights on the bumper of the 1101, but did not get close to them until the middle of lap 2. Got passed by the 1134, but passed them back. Don't remember if that was lap 1 or 2. Caught the 1101 as we were coming down next to the power plant road and was right on his bumper before we both had to slow and divert course for a caution. Once we were clear it was on again. I got next to the 1101 before the turn heading to the infield but couldn't close the deal. It took about another 300 yards to get by them to secure the lead as we headed into the hot pits. Finished lap 2 in 1st and started out on the 3rd and final lap. I saw the 1101 stop in the infield and set my sights on staying in front of the 1134. Ran up front the entire 3rd lap and then with about a hald mile to go had to slow down for a caution where the 1162 was turned over in a corner. We slowed down and squeezed around the 1162 and the 1134 passed us on the left. I wasn't too happy about that, but figured I could catch him or finish a close 2nd. We ended the day in 2nd by about 3 seconds. The 1102 finished 3rd.

Day 2 the 1189 started on the front row and came out of the infield I think in 3rd. Because of all the mudd on the course I quickly lost vision and had to back off a bit. I moved up to 2nd behind the 1134, but never didn't have anything (suspension wise) for them on day 2. We ran in 2nd place for all 3 laps, but were very aware of the1162 who kept popping up in my mirror. We finished day 2 and the weekend in 2nd place. 1162 in 3rd for day 2 and the 1102 of Mr. John Ruiz came in 4th for a 3rd overall.

Now my side of the story about the penalty of the 1134. While I didn't like the 1134's pass, I didn't mention it as I figured we could battle it out on day 2. I was approached by a couple of racers and officials and questioned about the pass. I never gave it a second thought and was very suprised when I saw the final results. I in no way lobbied/protested to steal a win from Steve 1134 as he cleanly kicked my a$$ on day 2. Apparantly the SNORE officials want to send a message about course and course worker safety and penalized the 1134 two minutes which gave me the win.

Here is the whole day 1 race from my windshield. (Couldn't figure out how short cut them so go to youtube if you want to take a ride in the 1189)

Hi Folks,1134 here. First of all let me say it was great weekend with a lot of close racing and great people. My first event with SNORE ,I raced with SCORE in 5/16 from 2001 to 2006 doing every event then in BITD in a 1600 car. Some might remember also my elm green 69 class 11 from MORE races back in the mid 2000's, The one with the shortened back end, lol.
Ed, I have a different perspective on the penalty issue and controversial pass.
We had passed back and forth a few times, racing at its best ! As we approached the rolled bug on the final lap I noticed a few course workers directing traffic, one guy was 20 yards back on the left of the course. You had slowed down but gotten, in my opinion, too close to the rolled vehicle and you were trying to auger up the soft berm on the inside next to the upside down bug. This is visible on your in car footage as well. At the same time the course worker waved me with a pointed flag to a different line further to the inside where there were already tracks. I was in first gear 5 yards to the left and ,in my opinion, did not pose a hazard to anyone.
I dont know who approached you but I did notice you head right over to the trailer talking to the tech marshal and other officials.I knew you didnt like the pass but figured if there was an issue I would have a chance to give my side of the story.
There were only 4 or 5 penalties issued in the whole weekend of 250+ cars and 2 days of close racing ,if SNORE was trying to make an example I hardly think a class 11 car going 5 mph was a grievous offense. That said I would have accepted a penalty at that point if the officials heard both sides and ruled that way at the time of the incident.
Had I known I was 2 minutes down I would have raced harder on sunday , After the other cars were apparently having problems ,I slowed my pace substantially for the final 2 laps to save my car for ridgecrest. little did I know I was 2 minutes behind. Page 1

I contacted SNORE once the results came out and they responded quickly ,they stood with their decision but admitted I should have been told about it on saturday.
At the end of the day I am appreciative of SNORE for giving us a safe place to race and their thankless work and it is up to us to make sure that any issue that cant be settled with a stopwatch gets both sides of the story.
Thats all I will say about the issue.
See you all in ridgecrest! Steve Landis #1134

Steve, congrats on your race and like I said in every post you cleanly beat me Sunday. Saturday's pass was not gentleman like, but I never said it endangered anyone nor did I run to any officials after the race. Nothing could be further from the truth and I likely have video to show that too. Pretty sure the first thing I did was shake your hand along with Brendens and then stood there talking to ny nephew Corey 989 and the other Class 11 finishers. I was called during the week by a board member that questioned me about where and when the pass took place. I'll say for the last time, I lobbied nobody to steal a win, but sure would have loved to have bragging rights on day 1. Congrats again on your first outing in the new car and it was a pleasure racing against you. Look forward to doing it again.

And one more thing, if you're saying you slowed the pace considerably on day two to save the car we are all in trouble in Ridgecrest. Maybe I'll just stay home!!!

First and foremost, I'd like to send a BIG congradulations to Ed Mahoney. It was his weekend and he deserved it. After all, he hadnt won a race since he raced himself at the '07 MINT 400.
As far as 1191 goes, the weekend wasnt ours. Minor issues set us far back on Saturday, definitely leaving Dave with his work cut out for him on Sunday. As expected, Dave shot out from last to first like a missle (on youtube) and by the end of the CORE track had a mile lead on the pack (i never heard him cry about mud or any lame excuse). Long story short, while being stuck behind a 516 for quite some time, 1134 eventually caught up, and while slowing for a turn, 1134 punched us in the decklid which knocked the fanbelt off and put us out of the race. Maybe he doesnt remember hitting us, but oh well. Again, congrats to all winners/finishers. 1191 will be back.

It was the 06 Buffalo Bills 400 we raced ourselves and spent the day helping downed racers. 07 was the BB 400 where we lost a motor, but there were 4 or 5 cars........ 08 was the MINT we dominated...with 11 cars.......bwaaahhhh

Great Video Dennis, I built the blue car you had trouble getting by. I have beat the entire 51600 class twice in my class 11 at BAP. Wish you could have been up front with us, it was intense, that back stretch where you passed Ed I pushed 8 class 9 cars out of the way by the time we made the right into the no passing zone violently with Rulo right behind me with Shermack on his bumper and Guy on his. had another 6 in the no passing zone pushed the one right in front into the 1 in front of him and the next the same. Passed all 6 at that right turn. Rulo and I banged each other all 4 laps, I blew it at the last big jump before the infield leading to the finish, I sailed that in 4th gear and sail off into the dezert going to the left when the course went right LOL lost by 4 seconds or so. Rulo went by when I landed. 5 1600 is where its at, the competition, door banging bumper bustin is great. Get em at ridgcrest.. Rulo posted a great video from rage at the river of 3 laps of us battling back and forth. Look on you tube Laughlin Snore race 2013 554 day 2 incar.

I understand, I have had the 51600 since 1978! when all the cars left class 11 for 51600. DO NOT cut up a class 11 to make a 51600, we did that with our first 516000 car and only the main hoops were left

I would never cut up 1142!

But there are some pretty nice 5/1600 on racedezert for 12G. I'm sure, just like class 11, you could never build it for that.

to build a new 51600 starting with nothing is 40 to 50 grand or more with the very best, but most cars you see are pigs with nice paint, My early years in 516 I learned weight is everything, Nothing goes for a ride, the car is as lite as possable, the class was huge and 20 of us could win on any given day! The money won was huge! I know no one these days that has a true build lite weight short course car like my 586 or 1158, not even close. 586 tips snores scales at 1503lbs, 1158 is under 1600lbs at about 1560. Bill Shapley weighed both 4 times because he thought his scales were wrong. Most you find have everything including the kitchen sink glued to them. The 1 and only extra thing in my cars is a electric fuel pump. I won a 500 mile race in my 11 with zero parts zero tools no tire no jack. You can get 51600 cars with great parts and a ton of them glued on with 1/4 plate, but I would junk the car chassie and body and build a short course car, 065 049 the entire car bumpers front back except the main hoops, Both my bugs the skid plates have hundreds of holes drilled in them, Removed over half the weight I dont even have one up front except a aluminum door panel to deflect the wind on the 11, none up front on the baja(remember giving a ride?) Does it hold up you ask? 2 Mint 400s, 4 at Scores Parker 400 7 snore 250 including 1 of those we broke a torsion finger fixed it and won Baja 500 and 1000 2 fireworks 250 and over 100 short course wins with a flexi flyer. I have yet to weld up a crack. I hope you make the move 1 day, both are fun but a baje is a no lift situation.

there is not 1 thing done on my car that cant be done on yours, I have bled everything I have learned in 39 years building and racing these cars on this site trying to help people build cars that can compete and not get frustrated and quit. 1158 is set up for me only, my driving style is much different from most, most would have a hard time driving my car because of the high reves it requires all the time and Momentum to stay on the pipe., 1158 aint no tractor like most, 1158 may or may not show for the Snore More night race later in the year, just got the trans back for it, 22 races on the same ring and pinion and it was put back in ,remember set up is everything, weight is everything same with torsion bar size, most run what we ran 39 years ago today which works but!!! and shock valving is very important, but experience is king, Think outside the box if you want or think you can go faster, a average class 11 is just that.. I have been driving and setting up these cars longer than most 11 racers have been alive,. good luck,
